Can an EV power your house? V2H, V2G, and home batteries explained
An electric vehicle is often the biggest battery a homeowner owns. It sits in the garage with far more stored energy than many wall-mounted home batteries, yet most of the time it only does one job: drive.
Bidirectional charging is starting to change that. It lets electricity move both ways, into the vehicle and back out again.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center describes Level 2 charging as commonly operating around 3 to 19 kW. That range is enough to matter at home. When a charger and vehicle are designed for bidirectional power, the same garage connection can become part of a backup or energy management plan.
Three terms that get mixed together
V2H means vehicle-to-home. The EV sends power to the house during an outage or during expensive grid hours.
V2G means vehicle-to-grid. The EV can export power back to the utility grid, usually through a managed program.
V2E means vehicle-to-everything. It is a broader label for using a vehicle battery to support home loads, buildings, equipment, or the grid depending on the system design.
The idea sounds simple, but the details are technical. The car must support bidirectional discharge. The charger must support it. The home's electrical system needs the right switching and protection. The utility may need to approve export or grid-interactive operation.
An EV is not the same as a home battery
Using an EV for backup can be powerful, but it has one obvious catch: the vehicle may not be home. A stationary battery is always attached to the house. An EV might be at work, at school, or sitting at 28 percent state of charge when a storm arrives.
That is why many homes will use both. The stationary battery handles daily solar self-use, backup reserve, and short outages. The EV adds a larger energy source when it is plugged in and available.
